What it is for

A valve core is the cheapest part on the vehicle and the one that stops it moving: a core that leaks takes a tyre down overnight, and the car cannot leave the ramp until it is replaced. They cost almost nothing by the hundred, so the sensible stock level is a box on the shelf rather than a trip to the factor.

Buying them by the pack also means you stop reusing old ones — a core that has been out and back in twice is the one that leaks next week. The tool matters as much as the core: a bent remover chews the thread inside the stem, and then the stem has to be replaced as well.
