What it is for

A puncture repair is a decision about where the damage is. A nail through the tread can be plugged from the outside in five minutes and will hold for the life of the tyre; the same nail through the shoulder, or a cut longer than the plug, cannot be repaired at all and the customer needs to hear that before the wheel goes back on.

The rubber strip kit is the roadside answer: ream the hole, insert the strip, cut it flush. The mushroom plug is the workshop answer, fitted from inside the tyre so the head cannot be pushed back through — better on a repair that has to survive a motorway at load. Both kits live on the shelf because the alternative is turning away a ten-minute job.
