What it is for

A feeler gauge and a thread pitch gauge answer the two questions nothing else answers quickly: whether a gap is within specification, and what pitch a thread actually is when the bolt has come out of an unmarked box. Both work by comparison, so both live or die on the leaves being the size they claim to be.

On a feeler gauge the leaves must be clean and unbent — a folded leaf reads thick and sends you chasing a clearance that is fine. On a thread gauge, offer the leaf square to the thread and rock it: the pitch that sits flat across the crests is the right one, and picking by eye is how a bolt ends up cross-threaded in an alloy casting.
