What it is for

A valve stem is left alone until it fails, and it fails at the worst moment: the rubber ones harden with age and split at the base, which shows up as a slow puncture that keeps coming back after every repair. If a tyre keeps losing pressure and the repair itself holds, look at the stem before you look at the tyre again.

Snap-in rubber stems are the quick answer and the right one for a standard rim. Bolt-in metal stems are for higher pressures, for alloy wheels with a deep recessed seat and for anything that sees track use — they seal with a nut against a rubber washer rather than by elasticity, so they do not perish the same way.
