What it is for

A level with a weak magnet is worse than one without: it looks attached, then drops as you take your hand away, and you are back to holding it and squinting. The magnets here are set flush in the base so the frame sits flat on a steel panel or a machine bed, and the vial can be adjusted if it ever drifts.

600 mm is the size for a van door, a machine frame or a shelf — long enough to show a trend, short enough to fit where the long level will not. Check it against itself: read it, turn it end for end, read it again. If the two readings agree, the vial is true.
