ProFix Insulation Resistance Tester, 1 000 V

What it is for

Three instruments cover the electrical work in a workshop, and they are not interchangeable. A multimeter reads volts, resistance and continuity at a few milliamps; a clamp meter reads current without breaking the circuit, which is the only practical way to measure a starter draw; an insulation tester applies a high voltage to prove that a winding or a cable is not leaking to earth.

A meter's safety category matters more than its digit count. Working on a live vehicle circuit is CAT II territory; measurements inside a distribution board or on a fixed installation are CAT III and need the fusing and creepage distance that go with it. Buy the category your work actually reaches, not the cheapest unit with the same display.

Specification detail

Supplied with silicone test leads, a thermocouple probe and a soft carry case. 1 000 V rated, with a true-RMS 4 000-count display on the meter and clamp variants and a 1 000 V insulation range on the tester. Battery powered, with an auto power-off to save the cell.
