ProFix Digital Conductance Tester, 6/12 V

What it is for

A battery that reads 12.6 V at rest can still fail under the load a starter applies, which is why a tester that only measures voltage tells you very little. A carbon-pile load tester applies a real current for ten seconds and shows how far the voltage falls; a conductance tester injects a small AC signal and derives the cold-cranking capability without draining the battery.

Both are useful and they disagree usefully: the load tester is the one that reproduces a starting event, the conductance tester is the one you can run on a hundred vehicles without recharging anything in between. Test before you replace — the terminals, earth strap and alternator belt account for a fair share of what gets reported as a dead battery.
