What it is for
A charger that can be left connected is a different product from one that fills a battery in an hour. The maintainer models here hold a battery at its float voltage through winter storage, which is how a battery survives a season in a vehicle that is not being driven; the larger models add a repair cycle that pulses a sulphated cell before charging it normally.
Match the charge rate to the battery, not to convenience: roughly one tenth of the battery's amp-hour capacity is a safe continuous rate, so a 5 A charger suits a 50 Ah battery. Charging a large battery from a maintainer is slow but harmless; charging a small one from a 20 A unit without a current setting is not.
