What it is for

Knee protection is bought once and used for years, and the difference between a good pad and a bad one is what happens after an hour: a gel or memory-foam insert spreads the load, a hard shell takes the impact from a gravel drive. A strap that cuts in, or a pad that slides down the leg, means it comes off.

A rolling kneeler is the alternative where the work is a long low job rather than constant kneeling — a brake line or a sill — because it lets you move along without standing up. Choose by whether you kneel in place or move; the wrong one is the one left in the van.
