ProFix Disposable Ear Plugs, 200 pairs, SNR 35 dB

What it is for

Hearing damage is cumulative and painless, which is why it is the workshop injury people notice twenty years later. Sound level reduction is quoted as SNR or as a single-number rating; the numbers are useful for choosing between products, but they assume the protection is worn correctly and for the whole exposure.

Ear defenders are the practical choice where protection goes on and off through the day, because they can be hung round the neck. Foam plugs give a better seal under a welding helmet or against long hair, but only if they are rolled and inserted properly — a plug sitting at the entrance to the ear canal reduces very little.

Specification detail

200 pairs with the SNR listed above, supplied as folding ear defenders or as a refill box of disposable foam plugs. Defenders have a padded headband and pivoting cups; plugs are tapered foam that is rolled before insertion.

• SNR stated per product, so the rating can be compared with the noise you measure
• Folding headband on the defenders hangs round the neck between jobs
• Soft foam plugs seal under a welding helmet or a face shield
• Refill box keeps the plugs where the job is, not in the stores
