What it is for

The ratchet is the part of a socket set that gets replaced first, and the reason is almost always the same: the pawl wears and the head starts to slip under load. These use a 72-tooth mechanism with a sealed head, which spreads the load over more pawls and keeps the grease where it is needed.

A long handle is not a gimmick — it is the difference between reaching a suspension bolt from the ground and needing a ramp. Where a handle is extendable, the joint is the weak point and it is listed as such.
