What it is for

A floating shelf is chosen on two numbers and neither of them is the colour: the length, because it decides how many fixing points you need and where the studs have to fall, and the depth, because a 15 cm shelf holds paperbacks while a 25 cm shelf holds a printer. Everything else follows from those two.

These carry a concealed bracket inside the shelf body, so the shelf sits flush to the wall with no visible support. The load figure is given per shelf on a solid wall — on plasterboard the bracket has to land on a stud or on a hollow-wall anchor rated for it.
