What it is for

Impact sockets are not chrome sockets with a different label. They are made from a softer, tougher steel so they deform rather than shatter, and they are wall-thicker at the drive end because that is where a power tool loads them.

Using a chrome socket on an impact wrench is how a socket cracks and a fragment leaves the bay — the failure is sudden and it is the reason this range exists as its own category. The black black oxide finish is a phosphate coating rather than chrome, which is the visual difference you can check without a magnet.
