What it is for

Chisels and punches are struck with a hammer, so the failure mode is the head mushrooming and then spalling. These have a softened striking head — hard at the working end, softer at the top — which is the detail that separates a tool that lasts from one that sends a chip across the workshop.

The set covers the three jobs that come up: cutting a nut off a stud, driving a bearing race or pin out, and aligning holes for a bolt. Buy the size range that matches your work rather than the largest set — a punch that is too big for the pin will not help.
