What it is for

A crimped joint is a cold weld: the tool deforms the barrel and the metal of the terminal into the strands, and that is what makes it reliable. Solder needs heat near the insulation and a splice insulator; a crimp needs the right die, the right barrel size for the cable, and a pull test.
