What it is for

The plug, not the screw, is what holds a fixing in a wall, and the plug has to match the wall: a wall plug for brick relies on the material around it compressing, while a plasterboard plug grips the board itself because there is nothing behind it. Choosing the right one is the difference between a shelf that stays up and one that pulls out.

These are nylon plugs in the sizes listed, colour-coded where a range covers several diameters so the right one can be picked by eye. The plasterboard and hollow-wall versions use metal wings or toggles that open behind the board — do not use them in solid masonry.
