Pressure washer accessories are one of the few product categories where a wrong purchase is unambiguously useless: a surface cleaner with the wrong connector cannot be adapted with goodwill, and one rated below your machine's output will leak within a season. Two checks avoid both problems.

Check 1: the connector standard

Consumer pressure washers in Europe use one of three connection types:

• Bayonet (push-and-twist) — used by several major consumer brands; quick to swap, identified by a plastic collar.
• M22 screw thread — a threaded metal fitting, common on semi-professional machines and on machines sold for car washing.
• Proprietary quick-connect — brand-specific, and the reason a generic accessory sometimes simply will not fit.

Check 2: the pressure rating

Accessories have a maximum pressure, and it is not a marketing figure. A surface cleaner rated to 160 bar used on a 180 bar machine will lose its seals early, usually with no warning and usually just outside the return window. If your machine is above the rated figure, choose a higher-rated accessory rather than hoping.

Check 3 (bonus): flow rate

Rotating surface cleaners need a minimum flow to spin properly. On a low-flow machine the head turns slowly and leaves a spiral pattern instead of a clean path. Both the maximum and minimum flow are stated on our product pages; if yours sits at the low end, an extension wand and a nozzle may serve you better than a surface cleaner.

Storing them so they last

Empty the accessory after use — standing water in a surface cleaner is what destroys the swivel joint over winter. Store it indoors, and bring it out with the machine rather than leaving both in a shed where the frost does the damage.

Working method in one paragraph

Pre-soak hard surfaces so the dirt lifts, work in overlapping passes in one direction, then rinse at a shallow angle rather than pointing straight at the surface. A surface cleaner used this way covers a patio in half the time of a lance and leaves no zebra stripes.
