Wie Sie ein Garagenregal wählen, ohne zweimal zu kaufen
Most garage racks are bought the same way: someone looks at the space, picks the cheapest unit that seems big enough, and finds out six months later that the middle shelf has bowed. The rack did not fail because it was cheap — it failed because the number that mattered was not the number on the box.
Total load versus per-shelf load
A rack advertised as 875 kg across five shelves is a 175 kg per shelf rack. That distinction decides everything. A crate of tiles is 40 kg, a full tool box 25 kg, a car battery 18 kg, a set of four winter wheels 80 kg. If you plan with the total figure, you will overload one shelf and be surprised when the beam deflects.
Our rule: add up your heaviest realistic shelf, then buy at double that figure per shelf. Load ratings assume evenly distributed weight, and real loads are rarely even.
The three measurements people forget
- Doorway width and stair turn. A 120 cm wide rack will not go through a 78 cm cellar door assembled. Boltless racks ship flat and assemble on site, which is one reason we favour them.
- Ceiling height plus the space you need above. A rack that reaches the ceiling cannot be loaded from the top; leave at least 20 cm of working gap.
- The floor itself. A loaded rack on a damp cellar floor rusts from the base upward. Adjustable feet — or a plastic sheet under the uprights — solves it for very little money.
Boltless, bolted, or wall-mounted
Boltless racks slot together without tools and can be dismantled and moved. Bolted frames are stiffer and better for high loads but need assembly time and access to fixings. Wall-mounted shelving frees the floor entirely, which is the right answer in a narrow utility room where a freestanding rack would block the route to the boiler or the freezer.
When to spend more
Spend the extra when the rack will hold anything with sharp edges or unpredictable weight distribution, when several people will load it and nobody will read the rating, or when it sits in a working garage rather than a tidy cellar. Our heavy-duty rack costs half as much again as the boltless unit and holds 900 kg — that premium buys peace of mind in the second category, not in the first.
What we will tell you if you ask
Send us the space, the door width and the heaviest thing you plan to store, and we will tell you which rack is right and which is under-specified. It is a two-minute conversation that prevents the most common returns in this category.
